  • Top games I played 2011

    Top games I played 2011

A list of the games that I enjoyed in 2011. The list only includes games I played during the year, and not the year they were released. Note there are some major titles that I have yet to play, such as ‘Dark Souls’, ‘Uncharted 3’

The Elder Scrolls V:Skyrim : Thankfully I choose the Xbox360 version, I just love being in this world. The scale, scope and detail of this game is just remarkable. I see myself playing this for yrs

Bastion was strange, I first tried it mid-year for about 2 hrs. Thought it was good, but just didn’t bother going back to it. With all the end of year talk I thought I should have another go. I completed Crysis2 late one night and thought, i can give bastion a go. It got hold of me, and I ended playing it all through, only finishing at 3:30am in the morning on a work day :)

Loved the weapon levelling and the gameplay. People focus on the narration (which is good) but the strongest part of this game is its awesome gameplay

Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure: 2011 was the year I introduced my son to the StarWars Movies, apart from that awesome moment. The many hrs I played Skylanders with him was so bloody awesome, the game is solid and has great levelling mechanics with some awesome weapon upgrades. My son and I had a blast, we spent the day after boxing day desperately running around town looking for more characters. A great game for kids and adults alike

Side note, son completed it. The PC game you get for free is fun, My fav char = Trigger Happy

Singularity : Loved the story and gunplay, feels old skoolish, but in a good way. Raven delivered an engrossing single player FPS, solid gameplay loved the story and gunplay, feels old skoolish in a good way. Didn’t feel as bland as many of the current shooters. Raven delivered an engrossing single-player FPS, with solid gameplay that is consistent throughout. No real mega high-spots, but kept me interested and wanting more always.

I wish more FPS would be like this, as it doesn’t seem like they designed it by focus groups. But by the developers :)

  • Mass Effect 3, main story completed

Background – I found Mass Effect 1 so boring, my biggest gaming disappointment this gen. Whereas Mass Effect 2 I adored, loved the combat, the characters and the story. It grip me right until the end. Was such an epic experience. My only complaint would be that I would have preferred it if they had left in item management. This was simplified too much for my taste.

Mass Effect 3, I was so looking forward to this. anyways after about a good 25+ hrs I have completed the main story line. I struggled with the game from the start, it just wasn’t grabbing me. Think it was to do with the characters and story, I didn’t care for what was happening and to whom. So a very average beginning and middle, however thankfully it did pick up for me about two thirds in, and got ‘great’ towards the end.
I thought the visuals were not consistent, at times they was nice, at times quite dull and ugly. The sounds/music fantastic and was amazing on dolby digital system. I had a great time with the special skills. Weapons felt great and had some weight to them, and they all felt different. Disk Swapping was tedious (even though I installed to hard drive) The controls, holy crap the worst thing about the game. I always found myself attaching to cover whenever I didn’t want to and it was the main reason for many of my deaths, it became so frustrating at times, I even screamed at the TV (I don’t remember ME2 ever having such a problem).

To sum it up, a good game but I was hoping for more, but did really enjoy the last third. We don’t seem to be having much luck with the third instalments of games for this gen, seems like everyone is just treading water and delivering ‘average’, playing it to safe. (looking at you Uncharted 3, Halo3, Gears 3)

Still looking forward to what they produce next, as maybe not up to the bar set by Mass Effect 2. But still better than most.
